Driving With Swagger
56Interior Shot
Monday Morning
Whenever I think of getting pulled over I always assume I'll see flashing lights in my rear view mirror as I cruise over to the side of the road. The cop will approach my car and discipline me for driving with too much "style" as I act like he's wasting my time. Monday morning I got pulled over, and it wasn't nearly a glamorous experience. The officer walked out from the bushes into my lane and waved his hand at me to turn into a neighborhood. It was at this point I realized that there were several other cars there also getting ticketed because the road changes speed right where they stalk the bushes. I hope they are really proud of themselves. Once pulled over the police have to question you with routine questions. They either ask "Do you know how fast you were going?" or "Is there a reason you were driving so quickly?" This leads me to my question. What is a good answer to that?
When I bought my car I thought a digital speedometer was a great idea. It looks flashy and was unique at the time. I know realize it just gives me absolutely no reason to not know how fast I was driving when the officer asks. Of course they have to ask if you know how fast you were going. I mean, who doesn't. As soon as we realize were in trouble we look down to see how fast we were going. And who has an actual reason for this? I was driving to work. I don't even like going to work. Why would I want to get there faster? This aside, I tried to come up with something unique to answer his inevitable questions.
When he did ask me why I was driving so fast, I had only one witty response, and I thought maybe if I could get a laugh out of him, he'd just give me a warning. So I tried it.
Officer: "Do you know how fast you were going?"
Me: "I was trying to beat your high score"
At first I thought it worked, he laughed and told me that was actually pretty funny. We had a short conversation in which we acted like we were buddies. Then he proceeded to write me a ticket. I guess he didn't know that buddies don't write buddies tickets.
So this leads me to the reason for this posting. What do you say to an officer to get out of a speeding ticket? If you are an officer, what works? If you have done it before, share your story. Just leave it in the comments section below.
